TORRINGTON, CT — A New Milford accountant was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from clients, resolving three cases against him.
Carl Anderson, 41, had faced between 18 months and four years in prison under a plea agreement to avoid trial on two counts of first-degree larceny and one count of third-degree larceny in the cases.

Anderson, of Anderson Accounting and Finance, first was arrested in December 2023 on a warrant charging him with first-degree larceny in the theft of $25,000 from a couple who hired him to prepare their business tax returns.
He then was charged with first-degree larceny in January 2024, accused of stealing from a local business owner who had hired him “to complete bookkeeping and taxes services.” Investigators found he stole $20,000 from that client.
In March 2024, Anderson was arrested again, charged with third-degree larceny, after he was accused of taking more than $8,000 from a client in a tax scheme and lying about submitting paperwork, according to a warrant.
Anderson made full restitution prior to facing Superior Court Judge Brian Preleski, who questioned how the state Department of Consumer Protection could have granted Anderson a CPA license based on his license in the state of Washington, without consideration of a criminal record in that state.
According to Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Terri Sonnemann, Anderson was sentenced in the state of Washington to four years and two months for similar crimes in 2008.
Anderson’s defense attorney, Matthew M. Maddox, said his client has worked hard to pay back his clients back. Anderson apologized.
Anderson must serve three years of probation following the three-year term.
