July 1—A Weymouth woman was sentenced to prison for stealing over $1.2 million from the business where she worked as an accountant, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office said.
Ashley Sumner, 39, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Sumner pleaded guilty last week to a six-count indictment, specifically two counts of larceny of more than $1,200 by a single scheme, two counts of improper use of a credit card and one count each of larceny of property valued at more than $1,200 and money laundering.
“The defendant was a trusted employee with access to company credit cards who was responsible for the payroll and paying the company’s bills,” Morrissey said in a statement from his office. “Her actions siphoning the company’s money for her own personal use violated the trust of her employer.”
Between 2020 and 2023, Sumner worked as an accountant for Allstate Auto Glass in Holbrook, Morrissey’s office said. She made several fake credit card charges, direct deposits and wire transfers between January 2021 and February 2023, when she left her job.
Allstate Auto Glass in Holbrook told police in March they thought Ashley Sumner stole $50,000 from the business, Police Chief William Smith said in a statement at the time.
The business initially reported the theft to Holbrook police and accused her of stealing the funds, Morrissey’s office said. Following a five-month investigation, she was arrested in August 2023.
